This Limu coffee comes from smallholder farms in the Jimma zone of Ethiopia where coffee is often planted next to a farmer's cottage in a mixed type of farming which also includes cereals, maize, and livestock. The area has an altitude of 1600-2200 meters above sea level and is mainly highland with dense forest cover. The weather conditions are cool due to the high forests that receive over 8 months of rainfall. Jimma is known for its biosphere reserve and for being an excellent environment to grow all varieties of coffee. The soil type is slightly acidic with a PH of 5.3-6, with clay and loamy clay soil. The topography is sloping with moderate soil drainage and the rainfall is uniform throughout the 8 months of the rainy season, diminishing through the dry season. The average rainfall is between 1300 and 1700 mm per year. This particular lot is from the Gomma woreda in the Jimma zone and grown by Seyfu Abasadi along with several outgrowers. The coffee was collected through the Chedero and Limmu Sedecha Cooperatives and supplied to the family owned Yusuf Awole Coffee Processing Center. Washing stations like these have been a welcome addition to the region since they allow the farmers to fetch a much higher price for their coffee. This is possible because of the greater demand for washed coffee and also the initiative to improve post-harvest handling.
