The Ruvumbu washing station is situated in the southwest corner of the country on the mountainous shores of Lake Kivu. Like many other washing stations in Rwanda, Ruvumbu stared out as a cooperative-owned endeavor, where it produced around 100 metric tons of coffee cherries per year. Investments from a private owner has since fueled Ruvumbu's growth and it is now able to process nearly 250 metric tons of cherries annually. This is still a relatively small volume compared to many other washing stations in Rwanda, but despite it's size the washing station has some of the best coffee quality in the country. Ruvumbu took 3rd place overall in the 2014 Rwanda Cup of Excellence competition and was given a presidential award for receiving a cupping score above 90 points. The washing station uses a single-disc McKinnnon de-pulper and raised drying beds for processing and the Rwanda Trading Company is responsible for milling and exporting 100% of its parchment (dried coffee still in its shell) and green coffee.
